Introduction

Whether you’re looking to stimulate sales, promote a new product, or reward loyal customers, Coupon Codes are a tried-and-true strategy. They can be a powerful tool in your business arsenal, offering discounts that entice customers to shop and buy from you.

In this guide, you will learn how to utilize the Coupon Code feature in the Empress system. This feature lets you track leads from affiliates or sales partners, as well as offer discounts on overall purchases.

Before You Start

Before you jump in, there are two things you need to do:

  1. Enable the Show Apply Coupon Code option in the E Commerce Settings.
  2. Create a Pricing Rule with the Coupon Code Based option enabled.

Creating Your Coupon Code

Follow these straightforward steps to create a new coupon code:

  1. Go to the Coupon Code list and click on ‘New’.
  2. Type in a Coupon Name (for example, “SPRING SALE”).
  3. Pick a Coupon Type. You have two options here - Promotional (for advertising a general discount deal) and Gift Card (for generating a specific coupon code and giving it to a particular customer).
  4. A unique, read-only Coupon Code in capital letters will be created based on the Coupon Type and Coupon Name.
    • For a Promotional Coupon Type, the system removes all spaces and takes up to the first 8 characters (for example, SPRINGSA).
    • For a Gift Card Coupon Type, the system generates a random 11-digit code (for example, CX72B9TN4LD).
  5. Select a Pricing Rule with the coupon code based option enabled.
  6. Click ‘Save’ to complete your coupon code creation.

Understanding Coupon Code Features

Coupon Code Validity and Usage

Here are some important features to understand about coupon code validity and usage:

  1. Valid From - To: This is the period during which the coupon can be used.
  2. Maximum Use: This sets a limit on how many times the coupon code can be used.
  3. Used: Each time a Sales Order is submitted with a coupon code, this count increases by 1.
  4. Coupon Code Description: This can be used when creating an Email Template to inform potential customers about the coupon code and discount deal.

Applying Your Coupon Code

A coupon code can be applied in two ways:

  1. Through a URL: The coupon code will be automatically taken from the URL parameter (“cc”) and filled in the Apply Coupon Code textbox. This makes it easier for the user to apply the coupon code.
  2. Explicitly applying the code: The user can manually type in the code and click on the “Apply Coupon Code” button on the shopping cart page.

Once the coupon code is successfully applied, the price will be updated.
